Cafe Caspian

Tucked away in a difficult to see portion of a strip mall that once housed Phoenecia (it's now located in a huge building across the street), is this bit of Persian goodness. The forest of potted plants in front and the non-descript nature of the strip mall belies the semi-domed ceiling of the interior and the authentic feeling of this Houston institution.
Like many Persian restaurants, Cafe Caspian serves taftoon (flatbread) with feta and herbs. The difference is that the taftoon keeps coming even without prompting and the herbs are usually very fresh.
The entrees are divided into two categories, kebabs and stews. For the kebabs, we like the koobideh (ground beef). I like to add the zereshk (burberry) to the basmati rice to give it some extra zing. If you're expecially brave, order the cherries to top your rice. For stews, Rekha likes the ghormeh sabzi, but she says it's a bit too tangy for continuous eating. Here is the secret: order one stew and and one kebab between two people and share.
My Persian friends disagree quite a lot about what the best Persian restaurant is in Houston, but Cafe Caspian always makes the top three. Not a bad approval rate.

I've been to Cafe Caspian a few times and enjoyed the service and food. I can't recall what I've had, but I do recall that their tea was quite good. And yeah, it's not easy to find if you're just driving down Westheimer, but it is soooo worth it.
Dude! You need to add a feed to your blog!

I've been toying with the idea of switching away from Blogger. Two hang-ups...
1. saving and categorizing content
2. installing the new software
any suggestions?

I'm on Blogger for my personal stuff. I've read that Moveable Type is very good (ie: stable) and doesn't require a wagon train of additional software... mainly a server to host your materials. The Houston Metroblog uses Moveable Type, no?
You can still add a feed to your site with Blogger.

I enjoyed Cafe Caspian when it was on Hillcroft. I am glad to hear they re-opened. The rice and flat bread were great. The meats were fairly good. Although I like sumac, they seem to use it on everything.

I tried a Lebanese restaurant the other day (similar food to Persian) and kept thinking about Caspian... So Caspian still reigns supreme.

Darban is the best Persian restaurant in H-Town. It's cheap, served on paper plates with cans of soda. I love the fresh arm length flat bread they serve with the meal. And they give you free mint tea with sugar cubes at the end. Nice!
