Cafe 101

9889 Bellaire Blvd.

When we walked into the restaurant, I thought I was back in Alhambra's Chinatown, right next door to Los Angeles. Bold colors, clean lines, loud patrons, and colorful lights. But what really caught my attention were the waitresses... All were about five feet tall, incredibly skinny, and wearing micro miniskirts.

We had a hard time figuring out what type of food this place was trying to serve. They have sushi, kim chi, kung pao, shaved ice, and pork chops. What is key to enjoying this restaurant is to set your expectations. Come here late at night, after you've had a dinner that didn't quite satisfy. Enjoy the company of your friends at the rickity tables. Then, order from their 8 page drinks menu (no alcohol).

After you've figured out what $4 tea, fruit, frappe, tea/milk, tapioca drink you'll imbibe, start thinking about their limited food menu. We saw lots of folks order the hot pot. So we did too. We had the seafood kim chi hot pot. Remember what I said about expectations? The seafood hot pot comes with 2 shrimp, 2 pieces of squid, and 2 pieces of fish cake. Not exactly overflowing with high quality seafood, but it did satisfy 2 hungry people.

We ended our meal with shaved ice. I love the ice here: it's more flecks of ice rather than shavings. You can choose from a small menu of items that they put on top of your 2 cups of shaved ice. For those of you that haven't tried shaved ice, try this combo: condensed milk, green bean and pudding.

Expectations. Don't think you're getting a gourmet meal: come for the party atmosphere. Enjoy the lively discussions around you and at your table, ponder the the huge drinks menu, and share in the slow miniskirt service.

I've been looking into doing these feeds and I'm a bit befuddled by the options. Any suggestion on what service to use?

I use Feedburner (http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/home) as it allows for several feed options for readers to use. For reference ~ see bottom of my blog's page.

Either way, I don't think you can go wrong with any feed service.

Just found about this place also. I happened to be driving down Bellaire and saw the funky Lavender Neon Lights even at 11 PM at night. Stopped in for a late night tapioca Milk Tea (really good.. best I've had since New Orleans' Frosty Cafe) and had pan friend sliced cod with 3 side dishes and dessert -> all for $10 bucks. The decor is stylish with out being busy. Great chinese music in the back ground. I felt like I was chilling in Hong Kong.

Ate there for lunch.. food was ok.. but no soft drinks, so i opt'd for ice tea. it was sweetened(gasp) and costs $3. my friends double cooked pork was mostly tofu/beancurd. It had shavings of what looked like bacon fat. twice cooked?? maybe it needs a third hit at the wok.

Don't go ording sushi thinking it's gourmet, either. As tasty as it is, I've had better, to be honest.

The atmosphere is awesome, the food meets the standards (however minimum it is), so I'd give it a shot to anyone you'd like to impress with a casual atmosphere and a way to calm stress.

Just came from Cafe 101 today and I have a wonderful time. Servers were nice and engaged in humorous conversations. The taste is well worth the price. But I did get very attracted to one of the servers there. Very cute girl if I may add and Ill be there more often :)

I really like going to Cafe 101. Great atmosphere, good food, and excellent drinks. I always order the black pepper cod fish with rice(in the rice section) and lemon green tea with plum. I have never encountered being overcharged by them.

10 is the highest
Atmosphere: 7 (good for chatting)
Food: 2
Service: 1

I first went to Cafe 101 with my brother in law and I ordered Japanese green tea which doesn't look too pleasing but taste pretty good and we had a bunch of sashimis, which is plain but that's how sashimis are. Then we got the dessert with fruits on shaved ice, good. The trip was decent. The two other times I went were with friends -bad service. It was really slow and meals are served individually to each person on the table at different times. I finished my meal when the last person got his meal. I tried the specialty drinks and they were disgusting, don't try the ones with peach, nasty artificial peach flavoring. Don't try the udon either...it brings me to tears thinking about it. I understand the place is Korean but the servers had difficulties with our orders, they make second trips to ask us what our order was and sometimes it seems like they couldn't understand us. They also had problems with our split checks as well, we had to manually choose each of our orders so they know who got what. Note to them: get a notepad.

After reading all the reviews, I wanted to come and try it for myself. The food was a pleasant surprise, as there is quite a few items to choose from. My favorite is the sizzling beef dish.

I also ordred the blue baby and my friend ordered the normal tapioca milk tea, and the flavors are quite good, taste very authentic to my days in Taiwan.

The wait staff sometimes get busy, but is pleasant and trying to get our order quickly.

The atmosphere is very trendy, and not use to seeing that here in chinatown. Will for sure come again.

We mostly go to Cafe 101 kind of late after a stressful day, it's a good place to relax and the food is good, if you order something fairly standard. Not sure I'd want to experiment with some of the wilder things on the menu.

While the service is spotty, the waitresses are nice and the food is a decent value. The atmosphere is pretty good and I like the big TV, too.

As far as menu items, my favorites are probably the beef fried noodle and the (very) spicy chicken.
